Vienna Meidling shines: work of art enchants new train station!

In the heart of Vienna, Meidling train station has been extensively modernized since 2022 in order to offer the around 85,000 train passengers every day modern comfort and an attractive ambience. The ÖBB not only improved the infrastructure, but also created an impressive work of art entitled “The Lost Garden”, which extends over more than 300 square meters and decorates the new Passage West. Erich Pirkl, Managing Director of ÖBB-Immobilienmanagement GmbH, emphasizes that Meidling train station plays a central role as the city's second most important transport hub. The focus was on creating a space in which people feel comfortable and like to linger, which is underlined by the art project, which was created in cooperation with KÖR Kunst in Vienna's public space presse.wien.gv.at reported.

A central aspect of the modernization also concerns accessibility and the comfortable waiting areas, which have been in operation since July 2022. The new waiting area has been equipped with comfortable seating and modern departure monitors. The project therefore not only represents a task for the ÖBB, but is also received positively by local politicians, such as district leader Wilfried Zankl, who emphasizes the need for a well-developed, climate-friendly transport infrastructure. The creative combination of art and mobility, brought to life by the artist Christian Kosmas Mayer, is particularly impressive. He has conducted historical research and used artificial intelligence to reconstruct representations of the long-vanished Prónay Garden, offering travelers a visual insight into the past.

Vienna Central Station and its importance

The new Vienna Central Station is another milestone in the city's transport policy. It brings together trains at a central point and marks the progress of a comprehensive urban development plan that was revised back in 2004. The central station's architectural design includes a striking, sculptural roof that elevates the station into a city landmark while also serving as a connection point for the surrounding areas. The design of the roof, designed as a wave structure, not only creates impressive indoor and outdoor spaces, but also provides a feeling of dynamism and movement. Each segment of the roof is arranged in multiple dimensions, creating breathtaking light and shadow effects. Details such as the rhombus-shaped skylights and the protective facade made of glass triangles make the station an architectural highlight that is of central importance for the further development of urban space in Vienna, as well as by architizer.com is highlighted.
