New MoMA director Christophe Cherix: Rewriting art history!
Christophe Cherix has been appointed as the new director of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. The 55-year-old Geneva native will take office in September 2025, succeeding Glen Lowry, who led the museum for almost 30 years - the longest tenure in the history of the institution founded in 1929. The official announcement of his appointment was released by Marie-Josée Kravis, chair of the museum, and Sarah Arison, president. The board voted unanimously in favor of Cherix's appointment during a hastily called meeting, as the small newspaper reported.
Cherix came to MoMA in 2007 and has since held the position of chief curator of drawings and prints at the Robert Lehmann Foundation. During his time at the museum, he organized major exhibitions, including “Yoko Ono: One Woman Show, 1960-1971” in 2015 and “Betye Saar: Legends of Black Girl’s Window” in 2019. His extensive experience and strategic vision were recognized by Kravis, who also praised his deep knowledge of art history and interest in contemporary art.
A new leadership style
This is Cherix's first leadership position in an institution. He expressed that he was honored and excited to take on this important responsibility. Its goal is to expand MoMA's audience and give visitors closer access to art. MoMA, which has assets of nearly $1.7 billion, also has a sister institution, MoMA PS1, in Queens.
MoMA's collection includes masterpieces such as Pablo Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" and Vincent van Gogh's "Starry Night." Cherix's appointment comes at an important time for the museum to promote access to contemporary art to a wider audience.
Benefits for members
Concurrent with Cherix’s appointment, the MoMA Design Store offers a variety of products that reflect the museum’s perspective. MoMA members can benefit from exclusive benefits including a 20% discount on their first purchase as well as daily discounts of 10% and 20% during special Member Shopping Days. Additionally, members enjoy free standard shipping on orders over $35 within the 48 contiguous states.
Memberships also provide access to exclusive events, free tickets to MoMA films and the opportunity to have gifts wrapped for free. These measures not only promote ties to the art community, but also support MoMA's commitment to reaching a broader audience through innovative programs and offerings.
Overall, Cherix's appointment and MoMA's new initiatives demonstrate an intent to further develop the museum as a central element of New York's contemporary art scene and to promote inclusive access to art.
