Serious motorcycle accident in Jaidhof: Two bikers fight for their lives
On June 14, 2025, at 5:10 p.m. there was a serious accident between two motorcyclists on State Road 57 in the municipality of Jaidhof, Krems-Land district. A 51-year-old driver from the Korneuburg district was traveling from Gars am Kamp towards Gföhl when he slipped in a right-hand bend and got into the oncoming lane. Here he collided head-on with a 69-year-old motorcyclist who was traveling in the opposite direction. Both drivers suffered serious injuries in the collision, the 51-year-old was flown to the Krems State Hospital in an emergency helicopter, while the 69-year-old was taken to the Horn State Hospital in an ambulance, as Fireworld reported.
The incident in Jaidhof is part of a worrying trend that is shaping the start of the 2025 motorcycle season. In the last few days there have been several serious accidents that have put the lives of many motorcyclists in danger. According to Kurier, the most tragic accident occurred in Bad Schönau, where a 16-year-old biker died after a failed overtaking maneuver by a flatbed truck. His 18-year-old friend was seriously injured. Also in Upper Austria, two young motorcyclists collided head-on and suffered serious injuries.
Increase in motorcycle accidents
Accident statistics show that spring is often marked by tragic events for motorcyclists. The traffic clubs urge bikers to be careful and emphasize that such accidents are not inevitable in the spring. Georg Scheiblauer, chief motorcycle instructor at ÖAMTC driving technology, recommends, among other things, an adjustment period after long breaks and checking all important components of the motorcycle before the ride. Participation in driving technique training is also offered under safe conditions in order to minimize the risk of accidents.
The incidents are alarming in the context of current accident statistics. As of November 3, 2024, 78 motorcyclists have lost their lives, accounting for approximately 25% of all traffic fatalities. These numbers make it clear that motorcycle accidents are a serious threat, especially since 80% of fatal accidents are self-inflicted. Common causes are inadequate speed and unsuccessful overtaking maneuvers, although the risk remains high, particularly for those returning to the sport and inexperienced drivers. ÖAMTC highlights that despite a decline in road deaths in general, the situation among motorcyclists is stagnating.
Education and driving safety training
The increase in motorcycle accidents and accidents resulting in serious injuries makes it clear that there is an urgent need for action. The need for educational work and secure infrastructure is greater than ever. The fact that motorized two-wheelers are involved in such a high proportion of road deaths highlights the need for dedicated training and safety campaigns.
To help motorcyclists, the federal government in the federal states of Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol, Styria and Burgenland offers support in taking part in driving technique training, with funding of up to 100 euros. This could help increase safety on the roads and prevent tragic accidents like the one in Jaidhof.
