City leaders in Vienna: Climate protection in the focus of the fifth trilogue meeting

City leaders from Zurich, Hamburg and Vienna will meet in Vienna on June 11th and 12th, 2025 for the fifth trilogue of the three metropolises. In this context, the mayor of Zurich, Corine Mauch, the first mayor of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher, and Vienna's mayor Michael Ludwig will discuss a variety of topics ranging from climate protection and renewable energies to technology development and health infrastructure. OTS reports that the two-day visit includes both working discussions and a thematic supporting program.

A central point of the program on Wednesday is the visit to the large heat pump in Simmering and the waste disposal project “waste2value”. On Thursday, the modern Floridsdorf clinic will be visited, while at the same time a modernization program for Vienna's hospitals will be presented. Ludwig highlights the importance of international cooperation to tackle global challenges such as climate change, energy supply and inflation and calls for a push to create an EU housing commissioner.

International cooperation in focus

Corine Mauch and Peter Tschentscher support Ludwig in calling for more intensive international cooperation. Mauch emphasizes the active partnership between the cities, while Tschentscher highlights the parallel strategies of the social democratic-led city governments. The exchange in the trilogue format promotes discussions about large-scale urban projects and the associated challenges, which was already discussed in previous meetings in Hamburg, Vienna and Zurich. Deutschland.de emphasizes that climate protection is becoming increasingly important in the international partnerships of German cities.

An example of international cooperation in climate protection is the town twinning between Bonn and La Paz, which has existed since 2002. The focus is on sustainable development and concrete climate protection measures, which helps the city of La Paz to implement more environmentally friendly measures.

Promoting sustainable mobility

Another aspect of the discussions becomes clear through the Initiative for Transformative Urban Mobility (TUMI). This was initiated in 2016 by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and aims to make cities worldwide more climate-friendly and livable. More than two billion euros have already been invested in the modernization of sustainable urban mobility through TUMI, which underlines the need to develop innovative mobility solutions in Vienna and its partner cities. BMZ highlights that climate-friendly, safe and affordable urban mobility is crucial for access to work, healthcare and education.

The trilogue in Vienna offers an important platform for city leaders to discuss progress, challenges and possible solutions. The focus is particularly on the topics of climate protection and social justice in order to sustainably improve the quality of life in the twin cities.
