On October 30, 2024, the time has come again: World Savings Day is just around the corner! The SOS Children's Village Foundation now raises the voice and asks parents to train their little offspring in the art of saving from the earliest childhood. "Children can learn how to save!" Explains Petra Träg, Managing Director of the SOS Kinderdorf Foundation. With all the temptations of consumer culture, the little ones have to learn early that savings are much more than just accumulating money - it is a school for life skills!

In a time when online shopping, subscriptions and immediate satisfaction of wishes dominate, it is becoming increasingly difficult for young people to keep the flow of money under control. The danger of debt hovers like a dark shadow above them. It is therefore crucial that parents make their children fit in good time for dealing with money. Saving not only teaches how to manage money, but also important skills such as patience, determination and the sharp distinction between wishes and real needs.

The six life skills by saving

How important the early contact with money is is shown in the six skills that children learn while saving:

  1. Self -discipline: If you learn to ignore short -term wishes and to keep an eye on long -term goals, you will be strong for life!
  2. self -knowledge: children develop an awareness of their own needs and wishes.
  3. self -efficacy: By reaching savings goals, trust in your own ability to shape the future.
  4. appreciation: If not everything is available immediately, the value of things becomes clearer.
  5. patience: good things need time - a lesson that is so important!
  6. responsibility: saving school, keeping an eye on income and expenses - an ability that many adults learn late.
  7. parents give your children the chance to understand the world of money! World Savings Day offers the perfect opportunity to set common savings goals and show the little ones why it is cool to wait and save instead of grasping immediately for the latest toy. Bright children's eyes and long life lessons are waiting for you!
