Saving makes children strong: Six life skills for World Savings Day!

On October 30, 2024 it's that time again: World Savings Day is just around the corner! The SOS Children's Villages Foundation is now raising its voice and calling on parents to train their little ones in the art of saving from early childhood. “Children can learn how to save as early as the age of five to six!” explains Petra Träg, managing director of the SOS Children’s Villages Foundation. With all the temptations of consumer culture, little ones need to learn early on that saving is much more than just accumulating money - it's a school for life skills!
At a time when online shopping, subscriptions and instant gratification dominate, it is becoming increasingly difficult for young people to keep their money under control. The danger of indebtedness hovers over them like a dark shadow. It is therefore crucial that parents prepare their children to handle money in good time. Saving not only teaches how to manage money, but also important skills such as patience, determination and the sharp distinction between wants and real needs.
The six life skills through saving
The importance of early contact with money is reflected in the six skills that children learn when saving:
- Selbstdisziplin: Wer lernt, kurzfristige Wünsche zu ignorieren und langfristige Ziele im Blick zu behalten, wird für das Leben stark!
- Selbsterkenntnis: Kinder entwickeln ein Bewusstsein für ihre eigenen Bedürfnisse und Wünsche.
- Selbstwirksamkeit: Durch das Erreichen von Sparzielen wächst das Vertrauen in die eigene Fähigkeit, die Zukunft zu gestalten.
- Wertschätzung: Wenn nicht alles sofort verfügbar ist, wird der Wert der Dinge klarer.
- Geduld: Gute Dinge brauchen Zeit – eine Lektion, die so wichtig ist!
- Verantwortungsbewusstsein: Sparen schult, Einnahmen und Ausgaben im Blick zu behalten – eine Fähigkeit, die viele Erwachsene erst spät erlernen.
