universities have a special responsibility in the context of global challenges such as climate change, species death and resource shortage. The organizers of the Sustainability Day have therefore developed an agenda that illuminates important aspects of sustainable development, including renewable energies, sustainable mobility, circular economy, digitization and much more. Elisabeth Steiner, chairwoman of the alliance, emphasizes the importance of innovative solutions for the creation of a sustainable society, while Doris Link, COO of the FH Campus Vienna, emphasizes the interdisciplinary exchange as a key to sustainability innovations.

Sustainability Day 2025 is an important part of the efforts to implement sustainable practices in university formation. Such initiatives reflect the need to take a holistic look at complex challenges such as climate change and the loss of biodiversity. According to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), these two topics are closely linked and require significant measures to maintain ecologically valuable habitats.

biodiversity loss and climate change

biodiversity, the variety of life on earth, encompasses plants, animals and ecosystems and is important for essential ecosystem services such as clean water and a stable climate. The increase in resource use and the destruction of biodiversity areas tighten the existing twin crisis from climate change and loss of biodiversity. This requires not only national, but also international collaborations to address these challenges.

The BMBF initiated the Feda research initiative in 2019, which aims to stop the loss of biodiversity. This initiative relies on modern scientific methods, including artificial intelligence, to promote biodiversity monitoring and scenario development. The BMBF provides a total of up to 200 million euros for these projects.

In addition, the UNESCO program "Education for Sustainable Development: Global Sustainability Goals realize (BNE 2030)" "Using Education as a tool for sustainable development. It requires relevant institutions to implement measures to promote sustainable thinking and action, whereby the Federal Government regularly presents reports.

Overall, the upcoming event shows how important it is to strengthen the connection between university formation, sustainability and responsible use of natural resources in order to meet the global challenges of our time.
