Krefeld's Kaufhof will become an education center: Volks-Hochschule 2028!

There is significant news in the city of Krefeld that affects future educational offerings. At a special meeting on the evening of October 2, 2024, the Krefeld main committee unanimously decided that the adult education center (VHS) could move into the old Kaufhof building. This step is seen as an important initiative to strengthen educational offerings in the region and at the same time revitalize unused properties.

A private investor has presented plans for the conversion and renovation of the former Kaufhof, which are aimed at an area of 6,300 square meters. This public and private pact stipulates that the city of Krefeld will conclude an extensive rental agreement with the investor over a period of 25 years. The vision not only includes the location of the VHS, but also a mixed use of the area, which includes retail space, dining options and residential units.

Comprehensive renovation and new construction

The planned redesign of the Kaufhof should be completed by 2028 at the latest and handed over “turnkey”. This means that the premises will be completely renovated and prepared for use by the VHS. Many people consider the decision for this location to be sensible, as it is a central location that is easily accessible for visitors to the adult education center.

One aspect that is particularly highlighted in this project is the potential improvement of the urban living space. Integrating retail space and dining into the concept could not only promote the economic environment, but also contribute to a more lively neighborhood. Such mixed projects are in demand today because they offer an answer to the challenges of vacancies and urban development.

The decision of the main committee to reuse the old Kaufhof is exemplary of the trend in many cities to repurpose functional vacant properties and thus increase the attractiveness of the city center. However, such projects also require close cooperation between the city administration, local business and investors to take into account both the economic and social needs of the population.

The city of Krefeld now has the opportunity to not only create a new home for the adult education center, but also a complex that combines urban life and learning. For the citizens of Krefeld, this could represent a valuable expansion of their opportunities for further education, social interaction and leisure activities. Details of this exciting project are still being discussed, but the course has been made clear.
