FPÖ calls for evaluation of EU agreements: Is an Öxit” on the way?
In the current coalition talks to form a possible FPÖ-ÖVP government, a rumor arose about Austria's possible withdrawal from the UN. FPÖ foreign policy spokeswoman NAbg. Susanne Fürst described this information as “fake news”. According to Fürst, leaving the United Nations would contradict Austria's principle of neutrality. She reiterated that the FPÖ remains committed to international cooperation and has no plans to leave the UN. This clear commitment also shows that the FPÖ, despite its critical positions on the EU, maintains a responsible attitude towards international obligations ots.at reported.
FPÖ’s stance on the EU
The FPÖ is under pressure regarding its position on EU membership. According to a published agenda for coalition negotiations, the word “Öxit” will be avoided. Nevertheless, it appears that remaining in the EU is not seen as a primary goal. A document from the FPÖ only speaks of the “out-of-conflict status of the European Economic Area” (EEA). This suggests that the party plans to conduct a critical evaluation of all EU treaties and agreements. FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl has already called for a referendum on future EU treaty changes. Such proposals, such as the rejection of the EU asylum system and the call for the EU institutions to be halved, show that the FPÖ is clearly aiming at a realignment of European politics, which is what sn.at is highlighted.
The FPÖ also criticizes the role of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) and questions the transfer of competencies to the EU, without however making it clear how this could be legally structured. Talks about “putting an end to the damage to our economy caused by EU regulation” make it clear that the party has taken a closer look at a fundamental debate with the EU, while putting national interests first.
