Warning: Deadly old snow fields are threatening in the Alps!

The Austrian Alpine Club warns urgently about the danger of old snow fields in the mountains, especially after the unusual fresh snowfalls in May 2025. These snow accumulations also pose a serious danger to hikers in early summer. Jörg Randl, head of the mountain sports department at the Alpine Club, points out that old snow fields are created by the snow left lying there, which thaws during the day and freezes again at night. These conditions favor the formation of dangerous snow conditions, which are often found on north and east facing slopes and in old avalanche cones.

The cool temperatures in May extend this risk. Even after a predominantly snowless winter in 2024/25, the danger of crossing hard snow fields due to the recurring frost and thaw patterns remains.

Impact on hikers

Hikers should be aware of the risks associated with crossing old snow fields. Careless actions can result in serious or even fatal accidents. The danger is particularly dramatic on steep snow slopes, where even small inclines can result in uncontrollable speeds. Hiking at this time of year is not only a sporting activity, but it can also cost your life if safety precautions are not followed.

To safely cross old snow fields, the Alpine Club recommends wearing sturdy mountain hiking boots with hard tread soles and snow spikes. It is also advisable to carry hiking poles with you to keep your balance. Sufficient clothing, including gloves and long clothing, is particularly important during critical snow passages.

Safety rules and behavior

Essential safety rules for crossing old snow fields include:

  • Niemals direkt in der Falllinie nach unten steigen, sondern immer quer zum Hang gehen.
  • Die obersten zehn Zentimeter des Schnees sollten weich sein, bevor man das Schneefeld betritt.
  • Aufrechte Körperhaltung: Das Gewicht sollte über dem talseitigen Fuß gehalten werden.
  • Im Notfall: Bei einem Sturz sofort auf den Bauch werfen und mit Armen und Beinen bremsen.

Particular caution is required, especially on tours with children, where only moderate inclines and gentle, rock-free slopes can be considered appropriate.

Before setting off, hikers should check the current conditions. Sketches of snow depths, local webcams and route planning apps can provide valuable information. The Alpine Club also offers a video series entitled “Safe Mountain Hiking” as well as a comprehensive manual on this topic to increase safety in the mountains.

Overall, it remains crucial to approach the mountains with respect and always keep your own safety and that of your companions in mind. 5min and Alpine Club have compiled essential information that should alert every hiker to the dangers at an early stage.
