Future of the Sundering sports hall: renovation or new construction in Barnstorf?

A groundbreaking decision is pending in Barnstorf: the future fate of the ailing Sundering sports hall will be discussed in the joint municipal council on December 17th. The initial considerations for renovating or building a new hall are characterized by increased costs from the original 2.3 million to 4.55 million euros. This means that the grant of around one million euros received from the federal funding program “Renovation of municipal facilities in the areas of sport, youth and culture” may no longer be used, as is the case District newspaper reported.

Financial uncertainties and technical challenges

The administration's assessment suggests that the renovation is feasible with costs of around 2.4 million euros. However, the groundwater problem and the associated long-term measurements required represent a significant hurdle. A solution to the problems with average groundwater levels must be found before remediation can even be considered. The risk that reports will show that a renovation is not affordable or that the funding will not be released is real. These scenarios could enormously increase the cost gaps, as the Sports facility calculator describes where the costs for building a sports hall vary between 950,000 euros and several million euros.

The council members are faced with a choice between two options: either further reports will be commissioned to review the renovation or the funding of one million euros for the replacement building will be returned to the federal government. Time is of the essence, because the funding period ends on December 31, 2025, with the possibility of an extension until the end of 2026. Expectations are high that results will be available in spring 2025 that could decide on the future of the Sunderinghalle. The tense financial situation and the still unresolved question of the location of the Barnstorf elementary school make the decision all the more urgent.
