Wiener Linien launches an offensive: fewer illegal parking, more quality of life!

As part of a comprehensive offensive to improve public transport in Vienna, Wiener Linien and the City of Vienna are planning a series of measures to combat illegal parking. These not only disrupt the operations of public transport, but also often lead to delays for buses and trams. Although the number of illegal parkers has reduced in recent years, numerous illegal parkers will be observed again in 2024, especially at critical points such as Camillo-Sitte-Gasse in the 15th district, where tram line 9 is often blocked. The number of illegally parked cars in Kreuzgasse in Vienna-Währing was also significantly reduced, from 363 in 2020 to just 210 in 2024 - a decrease of over 40 percent, as presse.wien.gv.at reported.

As part of this initiative, the fine for parking on public transport areas was increased to 365 euros in 2023 in order to create a more effective means of combating the blockades. These measures to reduce illegal parking and to promote traffic flow on the tram tracks will be continued, as confirmed by meinbezirk.at. In 2022, the Vienna public transport company reported 1,528 cases of traffic disruptions caused by illegal parking, with 939 cases directly affecting trams. Those responsible are striving to further reduce this number.

Planned measures in Camillo-Sitte-Gasse

Extensive structural measures are planned for the expansion of Camillo-Sitte-Gasse, which are expected to be implemented in summer 2024. These include the unsealing of 500 square meters, the greening of 20 tall shrubs, the construction of drinking fountains and the installation of four new benches. The sidewalks should also be widened and visibility improved. The project is being implemented with an investment volume of over 600,000 euros in order not only to increase traffic safety, but also to improve the quality of life in the district, as kosmo.at explains.

In addition, 750 of around 1,050 traffic lights in Vienna will be equipped with priority switches for public transport, which will help buses and trains move through traffic more quickly. Planned improvements for lines 46 and 49 in the form of extended green phases are also planned for 2024 to further optimize journey times. Further efforts to give priority are taking place on the Marienbrücke for line 2, while the belt is to receive a faster crossing for line O, as the information shows.
