Vienna City Council: Millions approved for culture and new cycle paths!
On November 18, 2025, the Vienna City Council passed a majority decision to promote the Coproduction House Vienna GmbH met. This funding represents the 13th application within the last five years. The application was supported by the SPÖ, while the FPÖ could not agree due to alleged delays, cost increases and unclear guidelines. The FPÖ criticized the unequal treatment of funding recipients.
The SPÖ emphasized the need for additional funds for the brut in order to maintain operations and implement new projects. The funding of over 2 million euros that the City of Vienna provides for art and culture is also part of the discussion in the local council. The amount of 2,510,000 euros includes funding in the areas of cinema, literature and film, which was highlighted by the city councilor for culture and science, Veronica Kaup-Hasler, as a significant contribution to the connection between culture and social life well established.
Transport projects and citizen participation
In addition to the cultural policy issues, the local council also approved a loan approval for the construction of cycle paths on Landstraßer Hauptstrasse in the third district. This conversion is a long-awaited project that focuses on traffic safety and environmental benefits. Construction of the additional cycle paths is scheduled to begin next spring. The redesigned street sections will be equipped with trees, seating and green spaces.
The SPÖ emphasized the importance of citizen participation in the planning phase and cited the creation of traffic safety and green spaces as crucial. The GREENS demanded that dangerous road sections also be taken into account. In contrast, the FPÖ expressed concerns that the redesign measures were not well thought out and that there were fears of possible traffic congestion.
Memberships and Financing
Another important decision by the Vienna City Council was to terminate membership in the international network Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) at the end of 2025. This decision was also made by a majority, with the necessity of this membership and its financing being discussed. The City of Vienna regularly checks its memberships to ensure optimal financial use.
The broad topics in the local council illustrate the very different views on promoting art, culture and transport development in the city. The coming months will show how these decisions can be implemented in practice and what impact they will have on the citizens of Vienna.
