Vienna takes off: financing for the new multifunctional arena is in place!
On March 26, 2025, the Vienna City Council decided that the City of Vienna would contribute a maximum of around 153 million euros to the construction costs of the new Wien Holding Arena. The multifunctional event hall will accommodate up to 20,000 visitors and is designed to be one of the best multifunctional arenas in Europe. This arena will not only be used for concerts and shows, but also for sporting events, trade fairs and e-sports events. The project is being implemented by Wien Holding in collaboration with CTS EVENTIM, which is also responsible for the planning, construction, financing and operation of the arena.
The Wien Holding Arena is scheduled to be completed by 2030. When fully operational, up to 1.2 million visitors and up to 150 events are expected each year wienholding.at reported. The local council has also decided to make a provision of around 63 million euros for further technical and operational measures to ensure the functionality of the arena.
Sustainability and modern architecture
An important aspect of the project is the sustainable planning, construction and operation of the arena. Planned innovative architectural elements include a large wooden roof and a hybrid wooden high-rise connected to the hall by bridges. The roof will not only be technically state-of-the-art, but will also offer options for building services and stage technology. In addition, the planned sealing of the area of almost 35,000 m² is offset by additional plantings and hanging gardens, which takes into account the climatic requirements for building.
Overall, the arena is to be built on a former slaughterhouse site in Vienna's third district. This new multifunctional arena became necessary because the current Wiener Stadthalle, which is already 67 years old, no longer meets modern requirements. The aim is to sustainably secure Vienna as a top entertainment location and to keep large events in the city. CTS EVENTIM will also be actively involved in the ticketing revenue and economic success of the arena, which should make the new hall not only a cultural but also an economic center for Vienna.
The project preparation phase with CTS EVENTIM is already in full swing. The general conditions for the start of construction are to be determined by the end of 2025. This step illustrates the City of Vienna's desire to create a future-oriented and attractive range of events that will enrich the city's cultural life.
