Vienna starts construction of the modern central vocational school in Aspern!

On April 2, 2025, the city of Vienna held the official groundbreaking ceremony for a new central vocational school building in Seestadt Aspern. Mayor Michael Ludwig and Deputy Mayor Bettina Emmerling led the ceremony, which was attended by PORR management representatives, among others. This ambitious project is intended to provide state-of-the-art learning spaces for up to 7,500 students and is part of ongoing investments in Vienna's educational infrastructure.

The planned commissioning of the school building is planned for September 2028. Education is very important in Vienna, and the new school will bring together over 20 key apprenticeships - including logistics, e-commerce, construction and administration - under one roof. The building not only offers space for 350 employees, but will also bring together seven existing vocational schools. The deputy mayor emphasizes the importance of the modern training facility, which provides spacious learning rooms on a total of 29,000 m².

Architectural concept and sustainable energy supply

The architectural concept of the new school building is characterized by an innovative design. The external appearance is based on a green base that creates a harmonious connection to the surroundings. The upper volumes of the theory rooms appear to float and have a fixed sun protection made of vertical wooden slats, which serves both aesthetic and functional purposes by protecting against overheating in summer. These features give the building a striking characteristic that already makes it an eye-catcher in urban development. The winner of the EU-wide competition for general planning services, Kronaus Mitterer Architekten ZT GmbH, was selected for the project.

A sustainable energy concept is also being implemented. Geothermal energy and photovoltaic panels on the building's roofs will help cover much of the energy needs. This underlines the City of Vienna's commitment to environmentally friendly solutions in educational infrastructure. The open space design of the project also enables outdoor lessons and thus promotes the quality of stay for students.

Need for school places in Seestadt

In the context of educational measures, the City of Vienna’s investments are particularly relevant. A total of around 192 million euros will be invested in new educational infrastructure for schools by 2026. These measures are necessary because the city has recorded a continuous increase in compulsory school children of around 4,000 per year in the last three school years. Therefore, the city plans to create new learning environments to meet the increasing demand for school space.

Several expansions are planned for the 2025/26 school year in various districts of Vienna in order to meet the needs of the growing population. This includes, among other things, the expansion of existing schools as well as temporary mobile classes and the promotion of flexible and needs-oriented teaching operations in the Seestadt.

City Councilor for Education Christoph Wiederkehr emphasizes the urgency of creating additional school space and supporting the students in the best possible way. With these initiatives, the city of Vienna shows that it recognizes the education sector as a crucial component of urban development and is investing accordingly.

The new central vocational school building in Seestadt Aspern not only represents an answer to current needs, but also a sustainable investment step in the future of Vienna's educational landscape.
