Puma opens green logistics center: New ways of sustainability in Geiselwind!

Puma has opened a new logistics center in the Inno-Park commercial area in Geiselwind. The center's footprint is 11.6 hectares, with 6.3 hectares available for storage space. This location is supported by a solar farm that became operational in December 2022 and provides approximately a quarter of the distribution center's electricity needs. The solar park covers an area of 14,400 square meters, which is roughly the size of two football fields. The solar park produces around 1,900 megawatt hours of electricity annually. The remaining electricity requirements are also covered 100 percent by certified wind farms in Germany.

With a clear focus on sustainability, Puma plans to reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions and indirect emissions from purchased energy by 90 percent by 2030 compared to 2017. Ecological aspects were also taken into account when planning the site, including a green roof, which contributes to ecological sustainability. This green roof stores rainwater, relieves pressure on the local sewer system and improves the microclimate, with rainwater partly used to flush toilets in the building.

Technical details and capacities

The logistics center is equipped with 22 kilometers of conveyor technology and has the capacity to move up to 74 million items using 480 shuttle vehicles. Storage takes place in over 700,000 container spaces. In addition, the building is fully air-conditioned and has 36 loading doors and 141 truck parking spaces. In total, up to 250 employees work at the location.

The groundbreaking ceremony for Puma's new logistics and distribution center took place in 2020. The construction is being carried out by BLG LOGISTICS, which is also responsible for the overall project management. The collaboration between Puma and BLG LOGISTICS began in 2017. A highly complex multichannel system with a high level of automation and pioneering shuttle technology will be set up in the new facility. In addition, the new facility will create over 300 new jobs, with employees from the previous logistics center in Schlüsselfeld being transferred to the new facility. BLG LOGISTICS has been operating the current Puma logistics center in Schlüsselfeld since autumn 2018.
