Makeshift bridge over the Elbe: A quicker solution to Dresden's traffic chaos?

The city of Dresden has been facing pressing challenges since the partial collapse of the Carola Bridge in September. Until the complete new construction is completed in 2027, transport connections across the Elbe will remain problematic. While the city administration emphasizes the need for a replacement building, there are now concrete plans for a temporary bridge, as proposed by the Dresden AfD. According to initial estimates, an interim solution could be created in just six months to quickly restore traffic, the websites report Lomazoma and Sächsische.de.

Urgent measures required

The AfD demands that a temporary bridge be built in close cooperation with federal and state authorities. As the city administration works on a comprehensive replacement building, the need for a quicker solution is becoming increasingly louder among city council members. In particular, AfD city councilor Thomas Ladzinski emphasizes that, in addition to the roads, commercial traffic is also suffering from the delays. The costs for the planned temporary bridge would be in the single-digit million range, with the possibility of working parallel to the demolition phase.

But not all parties support this plan. The city has so far rejected the construction of a temporary bridge because it relies on a new replacement being built quickly. This leads to further tensions in the discussion about traffic management in the city. The worrying condition of the remaining bridge structures means that a solution is urgently needed, with time running out and pressure on those responsible increasing.
