Traffic chaos in Advent: traffic jams caused by shopping and handball in Vienna!

Next weekend, December 7th and 8th, 2024, there will be three major events in Austria that could lead to significant traffic disruptions. First of all, the second shopping Saturday in Advent takes place, which traditionally causes full shopping streets and traffic jams in the cities, as the ARBÖ reports. The access routes in Vienna are particularly affected, where Altmannsdorfer Straße, the southern motorway (A2) and the southeast tangent (A23) will cause delays. In the inner city, the main traffic axes such as the Belt and the Ring are also heavily used. In order to relieve traffic, Inner Mariahilfer Straße will be closed to traffic on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. This also means that cyclists and e-scooter drivers are not allowed to drive through this zone.

Large events cause traffic jams

But it's not just shopping Saturday that will put a strain on the streets. The main round of the Women's European Handball Championship in Vienna also contributes to the traffic situation. The exciting games will start on Thursday, December 5th, 2024, which will attract numerous handball fans to the Wiener Stadthalle. Accordingly, traffic jams are to be expected on the surrounding streets, including Hütteldorfer Straße and the Neubau belt. Car and parking spaces will be difficult to find, which is why the Wiener Linien is a recommended alternative to the journey.

Last but not least, the mountain festival in Saalbach-Hinterglemm on December 6th and 7th will attract tens of thousands of musicians and skiers. World-famous bands such as “Mando Diao” and “Sportfreunde Stiller” will perform, which will lead to a high volume of traffic on the Glemmtal Landesstraße (L111) and Pinzgauer Straße (B311). Drivers should therefore expect significant delays and may consider traveling by train. In summary, the weekend promises to be a challenge for all road users.

ARBÖ and the traffic forecast data from ÖAMTC warn urgently about traffic jams and recommend alternative travel methods to escape the traffic madness.
