Arnautović's panic attack: How he still prepared Austria's goal!

The Nations League duel between Austria and Serbia kicked off on March 20, 2025 in the Ernst Happel Stadium. But for Marko Arnautović, this game was anything but normal. Suddenly a panic attack threw him off track. “I had all the symptoms – pain in my knee, pressure in my upper abdomen and dizziness,” reported the 35-year-old striker after the game, but he handled this unexpected situation confidently. Thanks to medical support, he was able to continue and was even actively involved in the event with an impressive 70-meter sprint, which team boss Ralf Rangnick praised. The game ended 1-1 and the Austrians are now focusing on the second leg in Belgrade.

Arnautović, who contributed a perfect header to Austria's goal, was visibly relieved after the final whistle, but also confused about the panic attack. "I had no idea why. Suddenly fear overwhelmed me," he confessed. Fortunately, the symptoms disappeared after the team doctor gave him medication. Despite the health challenge, Arnautović played 90 minutes and led some promising attacks, but shot wide of the goal on several occasions. “It was an outstanding game, we completely dominated Serbia, but sometimes you don't take your chances,” he reflected after the game.

On to the next challenge

As the team looks ahead to the rematch against Serbia in Belgrade, Arnautović remains optimistic. "We know that the atmosphere there can be unique. I hope the stadium is full because we are going there to win," he explained. Despite the stress in this crucial match, anticipation for the next phase is high. "As you know, after the Nations League there is the World Cup qualification. Then we'll see each other in America!" he said resolutely.
