The car remains king of the streets: Saarländer rely on flexibility

A new report from the University of Technology and Economy (HTW) in Saarbrücken has analyzed the mobility of the Saarlanders and clearly shows that the car remains the most important means of transport in the region. The study shows that 70 percent of the Saarlanders prefer the car for trips below five kilometers. This was supported by a comprehensive data collection with an app in which the movements of over 400 participants were recorded over several months. Unlike in the past, however, a third of the Saar population is ready to use combinations of different means of transport such as car and train, says Jonas Vogt from HTW. Also the Tagesschau reported on this informative study.

suggestions for improving mobility

The study recommends increasing the clockwork of existing bus and rail connections to motivate more users to switch to public transport. In addition, apps such as the SAAR timetable should be further developed in order to be able to provide comprehensive information on bicycle routes and citizen bus offers. A better data basis is essential to make more detailed statements about the driving habits of the Saarlanders, which is the prerequisite for future mobility solutions. These points are also addressed in an accompanying study on the acceptance of smart mobility, which underlines the need in the transport infrastructure promote.

Overall, the study indicates that although the car continues to dominate, rethinking in mobility behavior could take place if suitable measures and improvements are offered. The results show how important it is to promote traffic connections and the acceptance of new mobility solutions in Saarland.
