The car remains king of the roads: Saarlanders rely on flexibility

A new report from the University of Technology and Economics (HTW) in Saarbrücken has analyzed the mobility of Saarlanders and shows clearly: the car remains the most important means of transport in the region. The study shows that 70 percent of Saarlanders prefer to use a car for journeys of less than five kilometers. This was supported by extensive data collection using an app that recorded the movements of over 400 participants over several months. Unlike in the past, however, a third of the Saar population is now willing to use combinations of different means of transport such as cars and trains, according to Jonas Vogt from HTW. Those too daily news reported this insightful study.

Suggestions for improving mobility

The study recommends increasing the frequency of existing bus and train connections in order to motivate more users to switch to public transport. In addition, apps such as the Saar timetable should be further developed in order to be able to provide more comprehensive information on cycle routes and citizen bus offers. A better database is essential in order to make more precise statements about the driving habits of Saarlanders, which is the prerequisite for future mobility solutions. These points are also included in an accompanying Study on the acceptance of smart mobility which underlines the need to promote innovative approaches in transport infrastructure.

Overall, the study suggests that although the car continues to dominate, a rethink in mobility behavior could take place if appropriate measures and improvements are offered. The results show how important it is to promote transport connections and the acceptance of new mobility solutions in Saarland.
