Magdas Hotel am Prater: A green future project brings life!
Magdas Hotel, the social business subsidiary of Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna, is launching an ambitious revitalization project at the Prater. The hotel, which operated between 2015 and 2022, will be converted into a modern, ecological city hotel. The aim is to transform the former senior citizens' home from the 1970s into a social and sustainable hotel.
The renovation measures are characterized by the responsible use of resources. The existing building will be retained and only the supporting structure and partition walls will be dismantled. The use of ecological building materials and the planning of resource-saving operations should help to actively support climate protection.
Award-winning environmental commitment
Magda's hotel received a special award even before the renovation: it received the klimaaktiv Gold, the highest quality mark in Austria for sustainable construction. With 978 out of 1,000 possible points, the project meets the highest requirements in the areas of energy efficiency, building material quality, comfort and health. Christian Heiss from Atelier Heiss, which is responsible for the general planning, emphasizes the importance of sustainability in architecture.
The technical details show that groundwater is used for heating and cooling and a photovoltaic system on the roof covers the electricity requirements. These measures save 372.19 tons of CO₂ annually, significantly reducing the project's ecological footprint.
Future-oriented work concept
The renovation is scheduled to begin in summer 2025 and will be completed by 2027. As the company reports, the new hotel will make an important contribution not only architecturally but also socially by offering employment opportunities to people with fewer job opportunities. The second magdas HOTEL is already planned for 2027 and will also be embedded in this social strategy.
The project not only combines an innovative approach to revitalizing an existing building, but also focuses on sustainable and social value creation, which is increasingly important these days. By combining environmental awareness with social aspects, Magdas Hotel shows that sustainable practices and economic interests can go hand in hand.
