Fight for social assistance: Vienna demands uniform regulation for everyone!

Wien, Österreich - in Vienna, decisive changes in the field of social assistance are based on both politically and financially excitement. In the course of a special meeting of the Vienna State Parliament, SPÖ city councilor Peter Hanke announced that a new “energy assistant package” of twelve million euros is being launched. This package is intended to benefit people in emergencies through energy vouchers. Hanke emphasizes that Viennese social services such as Caritas and Red Cross will act as contact points and offer targeted help in order to support the needy as best as possible. ORF explains more about this in her report.

At the same time, the social city councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ) expressed urgent demands for reforming minimum security. In his broadcast, he called for a central federal government for social assistance and a residence group for recognized refugees to standardize social assistance in Austria. Hacker criticized the current regulation, which enables different levels of social benefits in the federal states and results in an unequal distribution of funds. His argument was supported by Meinverzirk, which reported that many recognized refugees are currently living in Vienna and the city reaches the limits of their capacities.

hacker suggests that the labor market service (AMS) as a central authority should take over the administration of social assistance in order to be able to better integrate people into the labor market. In this tense political situation, there is increasingly debating social justice, while the government is required to set clear guidelines for the future. The goal is uniform regulations to ensure justice and social security for everyone, Hacker concludes. The discussions in the town hall have already led to an intensive exchange between the political parties, with the FPÖ in particular taking a critical attitude towards current social policy.
