Vienna refuses support: Demo for personal assistance is imminent!

The Vienna city government is under pressure after signing an important contract for personal assistance. This contract, which is part of the funding guideline to harmonize personal assistance in Austria, would have made it possible to grant people with different disabilities entitled to support outside the profession. While more and more groups are demanding support, it looks as if the city government continues to exclude affected people. Only people with physical disabilities should benefit from this service, which, according to the Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland (BSVWNB), is very injustice. Chairman Kurt Prall warns that the city of Vienna misses the chance to provide essential support for people with sensory disabilities and calls for participation in the upcoming demonstration for personal assistance on December 6, 2024, such as ots.at reported.

The demonstration will take place at 2:00 p.m. on the corner of Lichtenfelsgasse/Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz and aims to draw attention to the need to ensure that access to personal assistance is no longer discriminatory. This measure would not only have helped many people with disabilities, but also improved the legal framework in Vienna in accordance with the federal guidelines. The current situation is particularly questionable because it does not meet the requirements and needs of people with learning difficulties, mental illnesses and sensory disabilities, which makes comprehensive support in the community impossible.

The discussion about personal assistance also gains driving in other areas. Organizations such as the WAG emphasize that working as a personal assistant offers many advantages, including flexible working hours and the opportunity to gain valuable interpersonal experiences. According to WAG.OR.AT , the role of personal assistance is crucial to support people with disabilities in everyday life, in work and in their free time. Particular attention is paid to respect and cooperation at eye level, which underlines the importance of such positions. In view of the major challenges in the city, it remains to be seen whether the protests will lead to a rethinking in the Vienna city government and the necessary changes will be initiated.
