Warning strikes at Remondis: garbage collection is at a standstill – problems until Christmas!

In Schleswig-Holstein, garbage collection and disposal are at a standstill due to a current collective bargaining dispute. After the first day of warning strike at Remondis, which took place yesterday, employees at the Schleswig, Melsdorf and Lübeck locations stopped their work. How Euwid Recycling reports, around 60 to 70 percent of employees took part, which led to significant delays in waste disposal in the affected districts. The Ver.di union has already announced further warning strikes, which also affect the collection of residual and organic waste, which means that many garbage cans will not be emptied in the next few days.

The union is demanding a wage increase of 8.5 percent and an allowance of 2.25 euros per hour for the approximately 500 employees in the waste disposal industry. These demands result from a collective bargaining dispute with the Schleswig-Holstein Logistics Association. According to Ver.di negotiator Catrin Haas, no offers have been made by the company in two previous rounds of negotiations, which further increases the willingness to strike. The next negotiations are scheduled for January 20th, and until then, continued disruptions to garbage collection are expected.

Massive problems with garbage disposal

Like that NDR According to reports, some of the garbage bins in Remondis's entire area of responsibility have not been emptied and the situation will remain tense until Christmas. Residents are asked to put their waste out until the next regular collection, although excess quantities can be put in bags. The effects are particularly serious in the districts of Schleswig-Flensburg, Rendsburg-Eckernförde and Plön, as not only is regular disposal stopped, but bulky waste collection is also impaired.

Ver.di is targeting company profits and criticizing the fact that waste disposal fees are rising at the expense of employees, who only receive wages just above the minimum wage. “It cannot be the case that Remondis is making a killing on waste disposal fees while its employees are being underpriced,” emphasizes Haas. The situation remains tense and the union is prepared to intensify the strikes if the outcome of the negotiations does not change.
