Collective bargaining conflict at VW: Warning strikes threaten – employees are setting an example!

Wolfsburg. The collective bargaining conflict at Volkswagen is reaching a new peak! IG Metall has called for a nationwide warning strike on Monday, affecting all German VW locations except Osnabrück. This is happening in parallel to the ongoing collective bargaining round, and the union is announcing massive work stoppages!

During the first warning strike at the beginning of December, around 100,000 employees sent a clear signal: “Future instead of clear-cutting!” shouts Thorsten Gröger, the negotiator for IG Metall in Lower Saxony. On December 9th, the pressure on VW will be further increased because the employees are determined to fight for their rights. In Wolfsburg, work will stop for four hours, and not just once - every shift will be affected!

Massive protest rally in Wolfsburg

The strike will spread to several locations, including Zwickau, Hanover, Emden, Kassel-Baunatal, Braunschweig, Salzgitter and Chemnitz. In Wolfsburg, the action begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a protest rally in front of the executive board building, where high-profile speakers such as Gröger and works council leader Daniela Cavallo are expected. The fourth round of negotiations on the VW company tariff starts two hours later in the Volkswagen Arena.

The situation is tense: CEO Oliver Blume recently confirmed the austerity measures without giving any specific details about the feared factory closures. IG Metall sharply criticizes Blume's appearance and describes his Christmas wishes as a mockery in view of the threatened dismissals. The fronts in the collective bargaining dispute have hardened, and the employee side is demanding a rethink from top management in order to prevent mass layoffs and wage cuts.

Employment protection has already been lifted and, according to the works council, at least three plants and tens of thousands of jobs are at risk. VW is planning drastic cuts to save five billion euros, while IG Metall is fighting for fair pay for 120,000 employees. The next few days could be crucial for the future of Volkswagen employees!
