Students in need: Vienna's teachers fear for their safety!

The situation in Vienna’s schools is alarming. More and more teachers are reporting threats and a climate of fear that is severely affecting their work. Maximilian Krauss, the education policy spokesman for the FPÖ Vienna, criticizes the inaction of NEOS education councilor Christoph Wiederkehr. In a current media report, Krauss states that the dramatic conditions in schools are increasing and calls for immediate measures to protect teachers. “Teachers in Vienna have to be afraid to do their work,” says Krauss and warns against disrespectful treatment of educators, which is being reinforced by mass immigration from cultures with poor educational backgrounds. He sees the government as having a duty to take action to make schools safer places to learn again OTS reported.

Another aspect of the crisis is the increasing difficulty in communicating among teachers. They express fear of consequences when reporting on real-world problems. A Viennese teacher reports that she was threatened with serious legal consequences after crying for help about violence at her school. These fears are not unfounded; Many teachers feel restricted by service law when it comes to freedom of expression. The Education Directorate emphasizes that there is no ban on speaking, but many teachers report a climate of fear that forces them to remain anonymous profile shows.

Increasing violence and staff shortages

Violence in schools is also reaching worrying levels. Over the past five years, the number of student suspensions for violent acts has nearly tripled. This situation leads to up to two teachers quitting every day. According to outgoing Education Minister Martin Polaschek, it is crucial that teachers are not afraid to tell the truth. Nevertheless, many are holding back because they fear endangering their position. The new generation of teachers is faced with the challenge that hardly anyone can talk openly about the grievances now that principals no longer want to speak out or are unable to for legal reasons.

The container schools, which were set up as a temporary solution for the influx of students from Ukraine and Syria, have so far offered little relief. Of the 45 planned classes, only ten are currently in operation. However, this may just be a temporary calm before the storm as schools continue to face pressure to find effective solutions to the growing challenges.
