Pope Francis: Hope for cancer in dark times!
Pope Francis has urged not to let the people with cancer and their relatives down. At a meeting on December 14, 2024 with representatives of the Italian association against leukemia, lymphomas and myelome (AIL) in the Vatican, he emphasized how important it was to help people who suffer from these serious illnesses. "In the darkness of pain and fear, light of hope is needed," said the Pope. The 55th anniversary of the AIL offered the framework for this moving speech, in which the importance of closeness, friendship and support from the social environment was emphasized.
Important message of solidarity
On this occasion, Francis paid tribute to the comprehensive work of the AIL, which has operated medical research since its foundation in 1968 and takes care of the psychosocial support of those affected. "Your work is a light of hope," he said. In addition, he reported a remarkable progress in the treatment of blood cancer: A 14-year-old patient is treated in the Roman Children's Hospital Bambino Gesù using a new method that is promising. These successes are also the result of the commitment of the AIL, which works with over 80 regional branches. The Pope emphasized that society should not exclude sick people. "Disease is often perceived as a defeat, but it is up to us to focus on the people concerned," he appealed. The AIL enables people to draw hope and not to fall into isolation. Franziskus concluded his conversation with thanks to the helpers and volunteers of the association: "Thank you for the love and hope you give!" A strong sign that reminds us that nobody should be alone in the dark, as well as kathpress.at and Vaticannews.va .
