Emergency call 112: Day of the rescue workers in Europe on February 11th!
On February 11th, the “European Emergency Call Day” will be celebrated to raise awareness of the emergency number 112. In Austria, this important number is managed by the federal police's state control centers, which received an impressive 3.9 million calls to the emergency numbers 112 and 133 last year, as APA-OTS reports. That equates to more than 10,650 calls per day, with about a third of calls resulting in real police operations.
The police officers deployed do excellent work every day and support each other in critical situations. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner thanked the emergency services for their great commitment and prudence. In 2023, the police recorded a total of 1,360,000 operations, with a slight increase compared to the previous year, which is due to an increased presence of patrol officers in public spaces. The emergency call statistics also show a 15 percent decrease in calls compared to 2023, when 4.4 million calls were registered, according to a report by the Federal Ministry of the Interior BMI.
Quality and efficiency of emergency calls
Since 2021, all nine police state control centers in Austria have been certified according to the ISO standard 18295-1, which underlines the high quality of the emergency call services. This certification guarantees that the control centers are regularly checked by external audits to ensure the quality and efficiency of emergency call processing. In November 2024, the certification was extended for another two years, further solidifying the commitment to first-class service and safety for citizens.
