New White Cubes in Linz: Art that inspires and connects!

The new exhibition rooms, the so-called White Cubes, were ceremoniously opened in Linz today. State Governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) described the White Cubes as “innovative exhibition and education concepts” that combine technical excellence with artistic diversity. Over the next two years, temporary exhibitions are planned, which will be gradually integrated into the collection concept of the individual floors.

The next phase in the redesign of the permanent exhibitions includes significant changes. This includes the dismantling of the arcade in the second castle courtyard and a reorganization of the archaeology, prehistory and early history department. This will further enrich the artistic presentation in the castle museum.

First exhibitions in the White Cube

A highlight of the opening is the personal exhibition of the artist Elmar Trenkwalder, which is curated by Genoveva Rückert. In his entire oeuvre, Trenkwalder shows fifteen large ceramic sculptures, installations and graphics. Most recently he was active at the Gmundner Ceramics Manufactory and presented works on the occasion of the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024.

The OÖLKG also aims to pay more attention to outstanding Upper Austrian artists. In this context, Elisabeth Plank, who was born in Wels, is introduced by curator Gabriele Spindler. Plank presents an early work as well as her latest series “Ponds” and “Lyrics”. Her painting focuses on the investigation of fundamental painting principles and eschews narrative elements.

In addition, the exhibition “Vienna – Linz around 1900”, curated by Michaela Seiser and Sabine Sobotka, will open. This exhibition focuses on the fin de siècle and shows works by important artists, including Tina Blau, Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoschka. Upper Austrian artists such as Alfred Kubin and Klemens Brosch also receive attention. The role of regional driving forces of modernity is also discussed, including Michaela Paffinger and Tina Kofler.
