Gurktalbahn celebrates the start of the season: nostalgic rides and music on July 6th!
The Gurktalbahn, the only narrow-gauge railway in Carinthia, will ceremoniously open the summer season on July 6, 2025. The opening ceremony will take place at 12:00 p.m. at the Althofen train station and promises a celebration for many visitors. Klick Kärnten reports that live music by Andy Brunner and a culinary offer at Meli's Bahnhofstreff will round off the event. The Gurktalbahn is known for its historic wagons and locomotives, which offer passengers a nostalgic experience.
The railway line extends between the Pöckstein/Zwischenwassern and Althofen stops and runs every Sunday from July 7th to September 7th, 2025. In the historic carriages, passengers can enjoy their physical well-being from the dining car. There is also a photo stop during the journey, during which the steam locomotive briefly backs up to provide the best perspective for souvenir photos.
Cultural and pleasure trip through the Carinthian landscape
The Gurktalbahn not only shines with its nostalgic charm, but has been operated by the Gurkthalbahn-Kärntner Museumsbahn association since 1974. This is committed to the preservation and operation of the museum railway and its vehicles. The members do their work on a voluntary basis to keep this unique railway alive. You can support the project through steam train rides, memberships or donations, as Gurkthalbahn explains in detail.
Additional attractions include a tour of steam and diesel locomotives as well as passenger, freight and company wagons at Pöckstein train station, where railway lovers and day trippers get their money's worth. The large, narrow-gauge steam railway is the last remaining 760 mm railway in Carinthia and is considered the first museum railway in Austria, which takes guests through picturesque meadows and fields.
Nostalgic trips and the fascination of the narrow-gauge railway
The Gurktalbahn fits into the more comprehensive range of narrow-gauge railways and the new railway adventure trails in Austria. Just like the “little Semmeringbahn” and the historic Mariazellerbahn, it is very popular with railway enthusiasts. These cable cars, which regularly offer nostalgic rides, are a guaranteed treat for all day trippers. For example, the Tyrolean Achensee steam cog railway has been delighting its passengers with breathtaking views for more than 120 years.
With the Gurktalbahn, visitors not only experience a journey into the past, but also immerse themselves in the fascinating world of narrow-gauge romance. All departure times and wooden railway information is available online on the Gurkthalbahn website, where travelers can view the full range of rides and events.
