Fred Schulz: Remscheid's honorary citizen is retiring
Fred Schulz, a prominent name in Remscheid, is retiring on January 1, 2024. After more than 35 years as managing director of the Remscheid district craftsmen's association, Schulz, who is known not only for his entrepreneurial foresight but also for his tireless work on behalf of young talent in the craft sector, has completed an important phase of his career. “I am grateful for the numerous companions I have had the opportunity to get to know over the years,” said the 68-year-old, who maintained this connection particularly during the annual Old Master celebrations. In the past decades he has witnessed significant changes in the craft industry, characterized by digitalization and the gradual loss of traditional professions.
A commitment to the future
Schulz not only looked at the challenges, such as the ongoing shortage of skilled workers, with astute analysis, but also always put people in the foreground. “There is no unemployed master or journeyman unless they no longer want to,” he emphasized. The precarious situation of many companies fighting for orders is exacerbated by the decline in experienced skilled workers. In his role, Schulz always tried to support craft businesses with advice and support, even during the turbulent times of the corona pandemic, when the legal framework was changing rapidly.
Today the former mayor, who led the city from 1999 to 2004, is also celebrating his 60th birthday. The Remscheid CDU is using this occasion to congratulate its former chairman and loyal friend. “Fred Schulz left his mark on the CDU until his departure in January 2006,” emphasizes current party leader Jens Nettekoven. Schulz was considered a tireless fighter for the interests of his city and is described as a “doer” who always pursued pragmatic solutions. Despite health challenges that did not bring him to his knees after a lung cancer diagnosis several years ago, he now plans to spend more time with his wife Monika and continue to be socially active.
The realization that with every departing master a valuable treasure of knowledge is lost leaves a shadow over the end of his professional career. However, Fred Schulz remains a crucial part of Remscheid's city history, both as an entrepreneur and as a politician. RGA and RP Online reported on his farewell and the legacy he leaves behind.
