FPÖ politician Sommer: Alcohol accident forces him to resign!
On June 15, 2025, FPÖ state parliament member Michael Sommer announced that he was withdrawing from state politics. The move comes following an unfortunate incident where he crashed his Tesla while under the influence of alcohol. Udo Landbauer, deputy governor and state party chairman, commented on Sommer's resignation and emphasized that his political work was of high quality and flawless. He wished Sommer all the best for the future and thanked him for his handling of the incident that overshadowed his political career. OTS reports, that the incident caused Sommer to take responsibility.
The accident occurred on Friday evening as Sommer was driving home after a private party. According to reports, his alcohol level was around two per mille. Sommer expressed remorse and described his behavior as a “huge mistake.” While driving he felt increasingly worse and crashed into a curb, which resulted in a puncture. Regardless of the difficult situation, he continued on the rim, assuming he could make it the remaining few hundred meters home. Finally there was a collision on the Vienna North Bridge, which only resulted in sheet metal damage. Police determined his alcohol level, which he confirmed. Puls24 reports that the duration of the driving license revocation will be decided by the responsible authorities.
Political support and challenges
Although Sommer has lost his driver's license, he is not resigning and wants to continue working for the people in the district and in Lower Austria. He receives support from his party, which Christian Lausch, FPÖ National Councilor and local council member, underlined by stating that resignation is not an issue. This support could be crucial to maintaining his political influence despite this dire situation.
The incident also sheds light on the legal consequences associated with drink driving. According to a study on the subject, up to 56% of fine notices are incorrect. Alcohol limits vary depending on the situation and include strict measures for offenses above 0.5 per mille. Driving under the influence can result in not only fines and driving bans, but also civil claims, especially if accidents are involved. Quite current explains the importance of legal assistance in such incidents and the possibility of appealing against fines within 14 days.
