FPÖ leader Nepp: 31.3% of migrants unemployed – reform required now!
The newly published integration report is causing major discussions about the integration of migrants in Austria. According to the FPÖ, led by city councilor Dominik Nepp, the numbers are alarming. 31.3 percent of migrants from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq are unemployed, while the unemployment rate among Austrians is only 5.7 percent. Nepp expressed outrage at this situation and called for an end to unconditional social benefits, as he criticized the Vienna model of minimum income as outdated. This once again shows the challenges the country faces when it comes to integrating migrants. OTS reports.
These findings are in the context of a comprehensive integration report prepared by the German Center for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM) which sheds light on the situation in Germany. The Integration report comprises almost 400 pages and provides information about the participation of immigrants in various areas of life, including education, labor market integration processes and social participation. In Germany, around 25 percent of the population has a history of immigration, which is proving to be challenging, especially in the context of the latest waves of immigration from crisis regions.
Integration and the labor market
A key finding of the report is that people with a migrant background are significantly more affected by unemployment, around twice as much as people without a migrant background. This is not just a local problem, but a problem for society as a whole. BMAS highlights that despite progress made, there is still a need for action to improve the labor market integration of migrants. Language barriers, unrecognized foreign qualifications or a lack of information contribute significantly to this problem.
In order to counteract these challenges, various funding programs are being launched, such as the “Integration through Qualification – IQ” program. This cooperates with various ministries and aims to improve the recognition and integration of foreign professional qualifications. In addition, the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs offers special language support measures to make access to jobs easier.
Successes and challenges of integration policy
The State Minister for Migration, Refugees and Integration, Alabali-Radovan, highlights the successes of the integration policy measures, especially in the area of the labor market. Nevertheless, it is clear that the education sector is not yet sufficiently adapted to the diverse society. The integration report is intended to serve as a guideline for federal, state and local governments to identify and implement targeted measures to promote integration.
In summary, the current situation shows that there is still a great need for action to improve the integration of migrants into the labor market. Initiatives at different levels are necessary to ensure that the participation of all population groups is effectively promoted. It remains to be seen how the political parties, especially the FPÖ with its critical demands, will respond to the challenges.
