Skilled labor shortage in 2025: These professions are urgently needed!
On December 31, 2024, the Federal Ministry of Labor and Economic Affairs published the Skilled Labor Ordinance for 2025, which specifies the occupations in shortage for the coming year. Occupations with a shortage are those in which fewer than 1.5 job seekers per vacancy are registered with the AMS. For the year 2025, 81 nationwide and 66 specific occupations were identified. These include the professions of electrician, cook and health and nursing assistant. Minister Martin Kocher emphasized that despite a slight decline in job registrations at the AMS, the high number of 80,740 vacancies at the end of 2024 shows that the demand for workers in certain sectors remains unbroken, such as ots.at reported.
Shortage occupations and shortage of skilled workers
The shortage of skilled workers, a burning issue in the labor market, is also evident in neighboring countries such as Germany. The so-called bottleneck analysis by the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs helps to identify the professions in which there is a shortage of qualified workers. This analysis is particularly important to provide companies with guidance and to make it easier to recruit international skilled workers. The MINT professions (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology) are particularly hard hit, where the need for foreign specialists is growing, so that recruitment has been made easier by regulations such as the EU Blue Card lackberufe.de explained.
The labor market is facing considerable challenges: an aging population and rural exodus mean that rural regions in particular are increasingly suffering from personnel shortages. According to the bottleneck analysis, areas such as geriatric care in particular have long vacancy times, which suggests that many positions remain unfilled for months. The shortage of skilled workers therefore has a major impact on the economy and requires urgent measures to address it in order to meet the demands of the labor market. The identification and targeted promotion of occupations with a shortage remains a central concern of labor market policy.
