Volunteering in Uckermark: Petra Hübner receives a silver award!

Petra Hübner has been a pillar of the German Red Cross in the Uckermark Ost district association for over two decades. Her tireless efforts in disaster situations and her training in first aid have not only touched the lives of many people, but have also earned recognition from District Administrator Karina Dörk (CDU). She was recently honored with the Silver Medal of Honor in Civil Protection, a sign of her remarkable commitment. The award was originally supposed to be presented in September in Potsdam by the Minister of the Interior, but it took place at the last district council meeting before Christmas Uckermark courier reported.

Training and deployment in disaster protection

"Petra Hübner is more than just a member of the Red Cross. She is a first aid trainer and a tireless helper," said Dörk, praising her achievements. Their commitment extends across various areas, from training first responders to assisting in disaster situations. In the words of one comrade, Hübner is described as a “key figure in our disaster response” whose expertise is invaluable to the team. Especially in times when volunteer work is becoming increasingly important, this honor shows how indispensable such helpers are.

A look across the borders to Austria shows that the Austrian Red Cross also faces similar challenges and commitments. Petra Schmidt, head of health and social services, emphasizes the large number of projects that deal with child and elderly poverty as well as homelessness. In Austria, 1.5 million people are at risk of poverty or exclusion, including many children who are often cut off from educational opportunities. Support measures such as learning support by volunteers have an enormous impact on the living conditions of affected families oe24 reported.

The Team Austria Tafel and other initiatives help to alleviate emergencies, although the corona pandemic has caused a massive increase in demand for such help. These parallel operations of the Red Cross in Germany and Austria illustrate the immense importance of voluntary work for aid organizations in both countries. The new challenges and supporting people in times of crisis are at the heart of the commitment of these organizations.
