150 years of Gail regulation: book presentation and guests of honor in Hermagor!

On November 12, 2025, a special event took place in Hermagor: the “150 Years of Gail Regulation” anniversary. The focus of the celebrations was the presentation of a new book that was created in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection. This 120-page hard cover work in A4 format analyzes flood protection on the Gail from 1875 to today, Gailtal-Journal reports.

The authors of the book are experienced experts: Mag. Thomas Friedl, DI Hannes Poglitsch, DI Dr. Stephan Schober, DI Mag. Johann Wagner and DI Martin Wenk. DI Hannes Poglitsch presented an impressive Powerpoint lecture, supported by numerous photos and graphics, especially on the flood events of 2003 and 2018.

Moderation and guests of honor

The event was moderated by DI Norbert Sereinig, who welcomed the numerous guests of honor who attended. Among these were State Councilor Ing. Daniel Fellner, state parliament member and mayor Ronny Rull as well as several mayors from the region. In addition, district captain Mag. Dr. Heinz Pansi and state fire brigade commander Ing. Rudolf Robin present.

The welcoming words came from Mayor DI Leopold Astner, BH Mag. Dr. Heinz Pansi, DI Martin Wenk and State Councilor Ing. Daniel Fellner. The celebrations were musically accompanied by the Quartetto Brillante from the Hermagor Music School under the direction of director Gerald Waldner.

Current flood protection measures

Flood protection on the Gail remains of great importance for the future. The current measures include longitudinal and transverse dams as well as a total of 25 retention basins, which aim to protect residents and the environment from flood events.

The historic and at the same time future-oriented commitment to flood protection on the Gail was documented by the authors' comprehensive work in the new book. The presentation and the subsequent discussions made clear the importance of the topic for the region and nature.
