150 years of Ebelsberg Volunteer Fire Department: A celebration of community!

The Ebelsberg Volunteer Fire Department in Linz celebrated its 150th anniversary on May 17, 2025. This important event took place in a festive setting to which numerous representatives from politics and emergency organizations were invited, who acknowledged the enormous importance of the fire brigade in their speeches. The Ebelsberg Volunteer Fire Department was founded on May 31, 1875 and has played an indispensable role in the community ever since. The procession of honor from the old location to today's fire station at Marktmühlgasse 31 marked the start of the ceremony.

Another highlight of the celebrations was a vehicle and equipment show that showed historic emergency vehicles and equipment from 150 years of fire service history. The musical entertainment during the ceremony was provided by the Ebelsberg-Pichling Music Association, while culinary offerings and a children's program also made the day attractive for families. The Ebelsberg Volunteer Fire Department currently has around 30 active members and a committed youth group, which ensures the continuation of the traditional voluntary work and underlines the importance of disaster and civil protection.

Celebrations in Allershausen

The festival in the Ampertalhalle begins after the service and is musically accompanied by the Hohenkammer brass band. A big parade starts at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. and a party in the marquee with DJ Maya Flo from 10 p.m. Mayor Martin Vaas took over the patronage of the anniversary celebration. Around 600 invited guests are expected, along with the public. Last year, the Allershausen fire department was in continuous operation for seven days due to a flood, among other things, which underlines the significant appreciation of the fire department by the population.

Importance of the volunteer fire department

The role of the volunteer fire department is of great importance, especially in Germany, where around 70% of the population is served by volunteer fire departments. The need for volunteer fire departments is so great that there are over 22,000 of these organizations with approximately one million members, while there are only 110 professional fire departments. The legal regulations regarding the need for professional and voluntary fire departments vary between the different federal states in Germany, and the financial burden of a complete switch to professional fire departments would be prohibitive for many communities. In addition, volunteer fire departments generally arrive on the scene quicker than professional fire departments, which can be crucial in emergencies.

The volunteer fire department members, who must be between 16 and 60 years old and require a medical certificate, show a high level of commitment. This tradition highlights how important the volunteer fire department is to the safety and protection of the community. The past jubilee celebrations and the current festivities illustrate the awareness and appreciation that the population has for this essential facility.
