Atomic crisis: USA set clear borders in the nuclear dispute!
In the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran on the controversial nuclear program, the US government sets clear limits, especially with regard to uranium enrichment. In an interview with ABC News, US specialist Steve Witkoff warned that the United States cannot allow any enrichment, as this could open up the possibility of nuclear armament. A corresponding proposal from the United States, which deals with the enrichment, was, however, rejected by Tehran as unacceptable. The Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi expressed that the United States' claims were harmful to the negotiations and rejected US President Donald Trump's claim that there was a formal offer to settle the nuclear dispute. OE24 reports that Araqchi Washington accuses of Sending and contradictory messages that make the negotiating process more difficult.
Iran's President Massud Pezeshkian also rejects the American proposal and is extremely critical of the US claims. He emphasizes that Iran will not do without its own nuclear technology and independent uranium enrichment. These efforts are in the context of a severe economic crisis that was tightened by international sanctions. Iran had expanded the enrichment from uranium to up to 60 percent and, according to the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), soon has 275 kg of this heavily enriched substance. Tagesschau notes that around 42 kg could theoretically be needed to an uranium for an atomic bomb.
Current progress and negotiations
The negotiations between the two countries are complex and continue. A fourth round of talks took place in Maskat today, in Oman, to clarify the dispute. Behind the scenes mediates Oman between the United States and Iran after a meeting originally planned in Rome for May 4th for logistical reasons. Experts argue that the differences in the negotiation positions are the main reason for the delay. Witkoff will enter the negotiating round with the maximum claim that Iran has to give up its enrichment program completely. However, this requirement is in a sharp contrast to the positions of Tehrans. Tagesschau added that Iran does not strive for an nuclear arsenal.
The talks are of crucial importance for both sides. While the United States is trying to move Iran to a new agreement to restrict its nuclear program, Iran is hoping for a relaxation of the sanctions that heavily burden the economy. The currency, the Rial, has recently lost value and is at a record low. Political and military pressure situations, including through the aggressive military policy of Israel, increase the complexity of these negotiations.
