Nine dead after strong earthquake in Tibet

At least nine people have lost their lives after a powerful earthquake struck a remote region of Tibet on Tuesday morning, Chinese state media reported.

Earthquake details

The magnitude 7.1 earthquake was recorded at 9:05 a.m. local time and followed several aftershocks, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. The earthquake's source was high in the remote Tibetan plateau, near the Himalayan border with Nepal.

Consequences of the earthquake

Some houses in villages reportedly collapsed due to the earthquake, state news agency Xinhua reported. The nearest major city to the epicenter is holy Shigatse, about 180 kilometers (111 miles) away. Shigatse is known as the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, who is the second highest spiritual leader in Tibetan Buddhism after the Dalai Lama.

Impact on neighboring countries

The USGS seismic map suggested the tremors were felt as far away as Nepal and parts of northern India. This is a developing story that will be continually updated.
