At least nine people have lost their lives after a violent earthquake shook a remote region of Tibet on Tuesday morning, reported Chinese state media.

The earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 was registered at 9:05 a.m. local time and followed several aftershocks, as the United States Geological Survey (USGS) announced. The earthquake stove was high in the remote Tibetan highlands, near the Himalayan border with Nepal.
Consequences of the earthquake
According to reports, some houses in villages have collapsed by the earthquake, as the state news agency Xinhua reported. The nearest larger city to the epicenter is the Holy Shigatse, which is about 180 kilometers (111 miles). Shigatse is known as the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, which is the second highest spiritual leader in Tibetan Buddhism, after the Dalai Lama.
