Rescue action before Gavdos: Dozens of migrants missed after ship accident!

Drama at sea: Greek coast guard is desperately looking for missing migrants!

A tragedy shakes the waters off the southern island of Gavdos! The Greek authorities recovered a man's body and saved 39 migrants from the stormy floods after their boat capsized. The coast guard is on alert and immediately started a large -scale search, supported by an Italian warship and several helicopters!

The situation is dramatic: witnesses report many other missing persons, while the coast guard tirelessly searches for survivors. Ships and aircraft are in use to find the missing migrants. An Italian warship and several helicopters circle over the accident area, while more ships are on the way to help.

rescue actions in full swing

But that's not all! At another place, about 40 nautical miles (74 km) in front of Gavdos, a cargo ship driving under Maltese flag saved 47 migrants from another boat. And that's not all: a tanker has brought 88 people to safety, who were 28 nautical miles (52 km) on the island in distress!

The first information indicates that the boats broke out together from Libya. This route is notorious and is often used by human smugglers. The dangers are enormous, and the reports of similar shipping gaps have been piling up in recent months. The waters around Crete and Gavdos, which are relatively isolated in the central Mediterranean, have become a dangerous scene.

a worrying increase

The numbers speak for themselves: In 2015-2016 Greece received almost a million migrants from the Middle East, Africa and Asia, who often chose the risky path across the sea on inflatable boats. This year the Ministry of Migration has recorded an alarming increase of 25 percent when entering, while the numbers for Rhodes and the southeastern Aegean have even increased by 30 percent!

The last few weeks have been shaped by other tragic incidents. Eight people died at the end of November, including six minors, north of the island of Samos on a route that is often used by human smugglers. The situation is serious and the aid organizations are faced with a huge challenge!
