New bike strip on Nibelungenbrücke: More security for cyclists!

From April 2025, the Nibelungen Bridge in Linz will be expanded by an additional wheel strip that increases safety and space for cyclists. According to orf.at , the existing bike path is supplemented by a 1.30 meter wide wheel strip, while safety strips of 25 centimeters provide additional protection. In addition, a one and a half meter high control unit separates the new wheel traces from the lanes, while the old bike path on the sideway remains unchanged. Construction work begins in the last week of March and are said to take two weeks. These measures are part of a comprehensive plan to improve the infrastructure, which will also be important for the general renovation of the bridge in 2028.

changes in road traffic

The changes on the bridge also have an impact on car traffic: the remaining lanes for cars are widened to three meters each. Local politicians, such as the city's traffic officer, emphasize that these measures ensure a clear separation of traffic flows between cyclists and pedestrians, which should increase the security in the entire area. In this context, the question of the necessary widths for cycle paths and the different types of cycling facilities arises. bike tours-checker.de explains that cycling lanes must have a minimum width of 1.60 meters in order to meet the requirements for safety and comfort.

The experiences gained from this project will be used in the coming months to design the final integration of the wheel strips into future blueprints. The aim is not only to increase traffic safety, but also to improve the general quality of life in Linz. The Mayor of Linz and other traffic experts see a step in the right direction in the new regulations in order to meet the growing number of cyclists and at the same time not to hinder motorized traffic.
