Christmas in prison: Bishop Jung brings hope and peace
Aschaffenburg, Deutschland - In a moving celebration on December 23, 2024, Bishop Dr. Franz Jung the correctional facility (JVA) Aschaffenburg to celebrate a special Christmas service with around 35 prisoners. In the multi -purpose hall, which is otherwise used as a table tennis room, the men gathered in order to experience a feeling of community and hope in the middle of the cold concrete walls and the Advent wreath in front of the altar, with the child of Jesus in the crib. Institutional manager Frank Dickmann informed that 115 prisoners currently live in the JVA who were caught because of less offenses and, shortly before the holidays, got the opportunity to shorten their punishment and spend the holidays at home.
The event offered the occupants the opportunity to experience contemplative moments. Musically accompanied by the Franciscan Community of Detaine, songs such as “singing angels sing in the fields”. Bishop Jung encouraged the men at his sermon to close peace with themselves and the people around them, and gave them the advice not to stay with questions like "what if ...". To make the holidays a little more festive, the prison served special menus for the prisoners over Christmas. After the celebration, Bishop Jung said goodbye to each of the people present, shook his hands and wished "Merry Christmas". The moment was particularly touching when a prisoner expressed his gratitude with the words "Thank you for being with us today".
