Austria celebrates ESC victory: JJ conquers the iTunes charts!
On May 17, 2025, Austria won the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), an important event that was pursued by over 160 million viewers worldwide. The 24-year-old opera singer JJ from Vienna achieved first place through his impressive appearance with the song "Wasted Love", an innovative combination of opera, techno and soprano. This victory marks Austria's third triumph in the ESC, according to the success of Udo Jürgens 1966 and Conchita Wurst 2014. There were protests around the competition in which some groups demanded the exclusion of Israel due to the conflict in Gaza, as well as further social debates on human rights
.
The official competition, which has been organized by the European Radio Union (EBU) since 1956, brings together artists from different countries every year to demonstrate their songs live. The juries and spectators coordinate and the points are allocated by all participating countries. The ESC has developed into one of the most of the non-sporty events worldwide and has been attracting viewers and artists alike for decades. The event is traditionally held in the land of the last year's winner, which means that the next edition could take place in Vienna, a wish that JJ expressed after his victory.
The top positions and charts
After JJ's high victory, the ESC hits currently dominate the iTunes charts. In particular, “Wasted Love” has been holding first place for several days. The following titles are on the iTunes list:

particularly emphasized that Lucio Corsi, who took fourth place at ESC, has now reached second place in the iTunes charts with "New Day". Tommy Cash, who took third place at ESC, is in third place in the charts with "Espresso Macchiato".
A look at the protests and social aspects
During the event there were around 200 protests in Basel, with some demonstrators trying to get on stage during the Yuval Raphael. This happened in a context in which pro-Palestinian groups demanded the exclusion of Israel from the competition, which further fueled the existing discussion about the political influences in the ESC. The ESC repeatedly increases debates about social issues and thus reflects the current global political situation.
Some artists are still represented in the charts after the competition, such as Conchita, who took 42th place with “Rise Like A Phoenix” from 2015. The success of the ESC artists shows not only the talent behind their performance, but also the attraction of the competition that has inspired the audience over the years.
For JJ, victory not only means personal happiness, but also hope and inspiration for many young artists and fans worldwide who are impressed by his unique style. The future of the Eurovision Song Contest seems promising, and the globe will continue to listen to what the next edition has.
