Chinese swimmers have the most doping tests before the World Championships

Chinese swimmer have completed more anti-doping tests this year than athletes from other countries before World Championships in Water Sports, taking place in Singapore this month. This was reported by the Aquatics Integrity Unit in a report.

Frequent tests of Chinese athletes

From January 1 to today, Chinese swimmers have completed an average of 8.8 anti-doping tests, while US swimmers have been tested just 4.1 times and British swimmers have been tested 2.2 times. The swimmers competing as neutral participants - mostly athletes of Russian nationality - were tested an average of 8.2 times.

Total number of tests and efforts for fair competition

In total, the Aquatics Integrity Unit conducted 4,018 anti-doping tests on athletes who will take part in the event in Singapore from July 11 to 22. The report emphasized: “This report underscores World Aquatics’ unwavering commitment to fair competition and the highest standards of integrity in aquatic sports.”

Public attention and previous doping incidents

The Chinese swimming team has been standing since the Revelations In April 2024, under increased scrutiny, 23 swimmers tested positive for a banned heart drug in 2021 but were allowed to take part in the Tokyo Olympics. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accepted the results of a Chinese investigation that found the positive tests were due to contamination from a hotel kitchen. An independent review confirmed WADA's handling of the case.

Ongoing testing during competitions

Testing will continue until the end of the event, with 830 samples planned over the 24 days of competition, the Aquatics Integrity Unit said. Chinese freestyle sprinter Wang Haoyu was tested 13 times, while 200-meter breaststroke world record holder Qin Haiyang completed 12 tests.
