Alcohol and winter sports: 200,000 drunks on Austria's slopes!
In Austria, a current survey causes a stir: Every year around 200,000 people practice winter sports under the influence of alcohol. This emerges from a representative study by the KFV, which presents alarming numbers regarding the behavior on the slopes. 10 percent of the respondents stated that they regularly drunk or tobogganing drunk, while 13 percent occasionally do so. "It has to be expected with an unreported number that does not want to admit your alcohol consumption," warns Dr. Johanna Trauner-Karner, head of the sports and leisure security department in the KFV, as well as OTS reported.
It is also worrying that 39 percent of those surveyed state that they have often said that other winter athletes were under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In addition to the health risks - emotional influences from alcohol, such as limited field of vision and balance - this consumption increases the risk of accidents. Every year, around 30,000 people are injured so badly in winter sports that they have to be treated in the hospital. Unfortunately, it often remains unclear how many of these accidents have been favored by the influence of alcohol, since many affected people do not answer honestly, such asalcohol consumption in the ski hut
The survey shows that alcohol and winter pleasure belong together for 38 percent of the respondents. Trauner-Karner recommends that alcoholic drinks to be used better after exercising and switch to non-alcoholic drinks and meals during the slopes. This could make a significant contribution to security on the slopes and help to minimize the risk of accidents. The scandalous numbers from this study underline the need for preventive measures - both for their own security and for those of the other athletes on the slopes.
