Sepp Straka disappoints at the Masters: only 87th place after a weak start!
The 89th edition of the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club got off to a disappointing start for Austrian golfer Sepp Straka. With a round of 78 strokes, he is in 87th place out of a total of 95 participants after the first day and is already six strokes behind par. Winning the famous “Green Jacket” seems to have become a long way off for Straka Laola1 reported.
Justin Rose of England leads the tournament after an outstanding performance with 65 shots, 7 under par. He has a comfortable lead of three strokes over his pursuers Scottie Scheffler, Ludvig Aberg and Corey Conners. Rose began his round with three birdies in a row and made eight birdies in total, despite a bogey on the final hole AP News.
Challenging course conditions
Conditions on the pitch were difficult due to rain on Monday. The average for the entire field was 73.6 strokes, meaning only six players broke the 70 mark. Scottie Scheffler shot a bogey-free round of 68, while Rory McIlroy's 72 was another below expectations as he has now failed to break 70 in the first round of the Masters seven straight times, AP News notes.
Rose, on the other hand, noted that it takes a lot of good shots to be successful on this challenging golf course. He said: “You can see that the golf course has shown its pitfalls,” which is also evident from the fact that only a few players recorded low scores. Bryson DeChambeau and Tyrrell Hatton, both of LIV Golf, shot 69 strokes, while 65-year-old Fred Couples became just the second player his age to play under par at the Masters (71 strokes), also reported DataGolf.
Course of the tournament and further results
Another notable moment from the first day was Nick Dunlap hitting 90 strokes, his highest round since Ben Crenshaw (91) in 2015. Hideki Matsuyama was also unlucky as his ball hit the flag and rolled into the water. Nicolai Hojgaard had an up-and-down round with one eagle, five birdies, four pars, five bogeys and three double bogeys that left him at 76 strokes.
With the way the tournament has gone so far, it will be exciting to see how the golfers fare in the coming days. It remains to be hoped that Straka can improve his game on the second day so as not to completely lose the chance of a better placement.
