McDonald's is planning a new restaurant in Windisch - is the Big Mac now?

Hauserstrasse 43, 5210 Windisch, Schweiz - McDonald’s is planning the opening of a new restaurant in Windisch, where the former building of the Coop branch at Hauserstrasse 43 has been empty since its closure at the end of November 2024. SFP Retail AG is the owner of the building, which was previously managed by Privera AG. In the Windisch population there was already speculation about possible subsequent tenants, including Migros, which, however, excluded a takeover.

The company has now started first discussions with the municipality of Windisch regarding a possible building permit. Jae Ah Kim, spokeswoman for McDonald’s Suisse, emphasized the importance of exchange with authorities and residents before submitting a building application. The owner SFP Retail AG will provide additional information on the planning steps in the coming week.

former failed expansion attempts

McDonald’s already had two failed attempts in the region to expand. In 2023, a building application in Würenlingen was rejected due to concerns about littering and traffic. Similarly, it went in Giftstorf in 2021, where the new building was stopped due to the lack of parking spaces and inadequate road development.

For the planned restaurant in Windisch, McDonald’s also plans innovative approaches to combat littering. Florian Goepfert, project manager at McDonald’s, explained that the company not only wants to collect waste from its own environment, but also from others to promote cleanliness. In recent years, over 70,000 working hours have been applied to keep roads and meadows clean.

The modern planning of the new restaurant comprises traffic and noise reports as well as soil probes in order to avoid possible approval problems. Residents can look forward to up to 270 seats and 41 parking spaces. In addition, a special focus is on environmentally friendly operation, including by providing electric charging sites.

With an expected number of traffic of around 520 customer trips per day, McDonald’s also wants to ensure good accessibility. Access to the restaurant takes place via Siggenthalerstrasse, where the knot is also widened. The actual opening times should be determined in coordination with the municipality of Windisch.

The planned restaurant is built from Swiss wood and relies on cooperation with regional companies and products, which underlines the approach of responsibility in the region. The first steps for the public presentation of the building application have already been initiated, and McDonald’s is open to feedback from the community and the neighbors to ensure a harmonious structure.
