Max Pechstein's masterpieces on a big tour - Zwickau in focus!

In a significant cultural initiative, more than 100 works by the well-known German Expressionist Max Pechstein (1881-1955) Zwickau to go on an international tour. This decision is related to the temporary closure of the Max Pechstein Museum in his hometown for extensive construction work, which should last until 2028. The selected collection, which includes paintings, photographs and diaries, is now made accessible to the world outside of Zwickaus. "There is a unique opportunity to show the works from the artist's hometown to an international audience," emphasized Petra Lewey, head of the Zwickau art collections, when presenting the plans.

The museum's closure is required to carry out extensive renovation work with a budget of 8.5 million euros. Maximilian Laste, director of the Tübingen Institute for Culture Exchange, emphasized that the family members of Pechstein, among them the grandchildren Julia and Martin, acted actively in realizing the loans. "An exhibition concept has arisen about this, which should convince internationally," he added. The exhibition will not only include paintings, watercolors and graphics, but also diary entries, photographs and sketches that give insights into Pechstein's creative process.

First stop: Rotterdam

The journey of the works of art will start next March in the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, a renowned exhibition space in the Netherlands. Over 20 museums in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as important institutions in the United States and Asia have already expressed interest in the exhibits. "We were almost flooded with inquiries," said the last one. Despite the emigration of the works, the Zwickauer does not have to do without the treasures of their most famous artist: Some selected works will be presented again in the city's art collections from next year.

Pechstein is considered one of the most prominent representatives of German Expressionism and was a central figure in the artist group "Brücke", which was founded, among others, by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Erich Heckel. Pechstein lived in Berlin and made numerous trips that gave him inspiration for many of his works, including the famous South Sea motifs for which he is known. The upcoming exhibition will offer a comprehensive overview of Pechstein's artistic development over seven decades, including its crucial works from various creative periods.

With this international tour, the heir Max Pechstein is visible and made experienced for a broader public. This is not only a great opportunity for the art community, but also an impressive gesture in order to appreciate the influence and inheritance of the eccentric artist. The exhibition will be invaluable for both art lovers and new generations of interested parties.
