Inferno in California: over 10,000 buildings on flames!
In the state of California, the forest fires that have raged since Tuesday are out of control and have already demanded devastating consequences. Over 10,000 buildings in Los Angeles were destroyed by the flames, including many single and apartment buildings, commercial properties and vehicles. The Pacific Palisades district is particularly affected, where more than 5,300 houses have burned down. The largest fire, known as the Palisades Fire, has recorded an area of around 8,000 hectares.
The fires have asked for at least five lives, including that of a 66-year-old man who resisted the evacuation and died in Altadena. In total, more than 100,000 people had to leave their houses, whereby the authorities in Hollywood ordered a part vacuation and asked the affected citizens with an official appeal to flee: "Leaving the immediate danger."
emergency services and weather conditions
A total of six large fires broke out in the region, and over 7,500 emergency services are fighting against the flames. The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, has emphasized that all available resources are mobilized to cope with the situation. Despite these efforts, fire chiefs report that there is a lack of water and staff for the extinguishing work.
The extreme weather conditions contribute to tightening the situation. Dry winds with gusts of up to 160 km/h disabled at the beginning the air support, but there are now progress in the extinguishing work because helicopters can successfully throw water. Critical weather conditions are expected until Friday.
In addition, the fires also attracted the attention of the US president. Joe Biden canceled a trip to Italy to react to the situation in Los Angeles and find out about the situation. He has assured the help affected by the fires.
