Cyclone Chido devastated Mayotte: Macron promises quick help!
After the devastating cyclone "Chido", which swept away with wind speeds over 220 kilometers on Saturday over the French island group Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, President Emmanuel Macron has promised to provide extensive reconstruction aids. When he visited the badly damaged island, he announced the creation of a compensation fund for no insurance. The destruction is enormous: according to official information, over 2,000 people have already been violated, and the number of fatalities could even go into the hundreds, according to François-Xavier Bieuville. In addition, the local infrastructure is badly affected, which dramatically exacerbates the situation for the approximately 310,000 residents of the island. According to reports, over half of the people are below the poverty line and partly live in devastating conditions.
In order to cover the acute needs of the population, the distribution of 23 tons of drinking water on Mayotte was launched on Wednesday, because the water supply system is very endangered in view of the destruction, as the Minister for overseas matters François-Noël Buffet explained. This is particularly important because many remaining water supplies are of poor quality. In addition to the drinking water distribution, humanitarian aids are also on the move; A naval ship with additional auxiliary material is expected shortly. Macron emphasized the urgency of the situation and promised to support the compatriots affected by the natural disaster, while concerns about possible health epidemics, including cholera, were also loud. The French government helpers are in use to cope with the worst effects of the cyclone, and soldiers have already organized help in the striking chaos while several people are waiting for water.
The situation on Mayotte is still shaped by tensions, since the inhabitants of the island criticize neglect by the French government. Again and again there are complaints about the problems with irregular migration from neighboring Comores and East Africa, which complicates the already tense situation. The “Chido” cyclone has also caused devastating damage in Mozambique, with at least 45 deaths and thousands of homeless, which also contains the entire region. Time is forced to support the overseas and its population, because while Macron and the government rush to help, the fate of many people remains uncertain.
