U.S. representative calls for Hamas to accept the GAZA cotton incision
The US special envoy Steve Witkoff has told CNN that a deal is currently on the table about a ceasefire and the release of hostages for the Gaza Strip. He asked Hamas to accept this offer to end the war.
Details of the proposal
The proposal provides for the release of half of the living hostages and the return of half of the deceased hostages in exchange for a temporary ceasefire. This ceasefire would be the starting point for comprehensive negotiations to achieve permanent peace.
willingness of the parties
Witkoff did not want to specify how long this temporary ceasefire would last, which is a decisive topic in the negotiations. "Israel will agree to a temporary ceasefire/hostage deal, which contains the return of half of the living and half of the deceased hostages and leads to substantial negotiations in order to find a way to a permanent ceasefire. I have agreed to lead these negotiations," said Witkoff on Monday. "This deal is on the table. Hamas should accept it."
reactions and further developments
So far, Hamas has not yet accepted the deal. Witkoff's statements are the first confirmation that he would lead the negotiations to terminate the war during the intended ceasefire. Hamas has demanded assurances for a long time that Israel will seriously enter into negotiations to terminate the war if it should agree to another temporary ceasefire after Israel rejected this during the last ceasefire.Different suggestions
Witkoff's commitment to negotiate a permanent ceasefire seems to be destroyed by giving Hama's assurance from Washington that Israel will take part in such negotiations in the future. Reuters previously reported that Hamas approved a proposal that would provide for the release of 10 hostages in two groups in exchange for a 70-day ceasefire. However, Witkoff emphasized that this was not his proposal. "What I saw is completely unacceptable," said Witkoff and referred to this report.
more information
A Palestinian official who is closely involved in the negotiations also confirmed to CNN that the Hamas Witkoff's proposal accepted, but announced no further details on the content of the deal. CNN asked the Israeli government for a comment.
